The story behind Obagi Read the full story

He grew up in Aleppo and earned his medical degree from the University of Damascus in 1972 before relocating to the United States, where a Syrian-trained dermatologist set about rewriting how doctors thought about skin. Zein Obagi's central heresy was simple and, at the time, contrarian: the point of skincare wasn't to mask wrinkles or bleach spots but to restore the skin to a state of health at the cellular level, an idea he branded Skin Health Restoration and turned into a protocol rather than a product.

The machinery arrived in 1985. That year he developed the Nu-Derm regimen and opened a training institute to teach other physicians his method, and he created the TCA-based Blue Peel, becoming one of the first dermatologists to peel darker skin types with reliable results rather than scarring. He codified the whole philosophy in a 1999 textbook that became required reading in aesthetic dermatology.

The corporate story turns thornier. After selling a controlling stake in 1997 he stayed on as medical director, but by 2006 he walked, saying the company had drifted from his original goals and his role had shrunk to a name on the box. In 2007 he launched a separate Beverly Hills line under his initials, and later publicly accused his former company of anti-competitive tactics. Ownership of the namesake brand, meanwhile, passed through a chain of investment hands over the following years.

The useful takeaway: the original system's science is real, particularly for stubborn pigmentation, but the most potent regimens lean on prescription-tier actives meant for supervised use. The man's exit doesn't undercut the chemistry he built, though it does mean the surname now functions as an asset that outlived his involvement. For a defined concern with provider access, it delivers; for idle maintenance, it's overkill.

Sun Shield Matte SPF 50

A dependable hybrid sunscreen built for the derm office waiting room crowd — people who want serious SPF 50 protection without the greasy, shiny aftermath. The matte finish is legitimately impressive for a formula packing 16.5% zinc oxide, though the $59 price tag asks a lot when the supporting cast of ingredients is fairly basic.

Therapeutic Moisturizer

The unglamorous third step of a physician-dispensed acne system, and a good one: twenty percent glycerin declared as a monograph active in an oil-free silicone cream that keeps peroxide-and-retinoid skin comfortable without clogging it. It does exactly that job and nothing else, its five-paraben preservative system now bars it from two states, and fifty dollars is a physician-shelf price for glycerin and dimethicone.

Healthy Skin Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 35

The Nu-Derm sunscreen patients actually wear: a sheer hybrid of nine percent zinc and octinoxate that vanishes into the skin, does not sting a hydroquinone face, and carries the Skin Cancer Foundation's seal. Its loyal reviewers are right about how it feels and wrong to overlook the label, which pairs an organic filter banned in Hawaii with five parabens, comedogenic esters and a DEA emulsifier; it is a 2000s formula Obagi would rather geo-fence than rebuild.

SUZANOBAGIMD Moisture Restore Hydration Replenishing Cream

A well-formulated physician-distributed barrier-replenishing moisturizer combining HA, palmitoyl tripeptide-37, squalane, shea butter, plankton extract complex, oat kernel oil, sodium ascorbate vitamin C, and apple fruit extract in the SUZANOBAGIMD sub-line. The fragrance-free composition extends universal skin-type compatibility, and the pairing with the matching Super Antioxidant Serum supports the brand's full-routine positioning. The $78 price and the comedogenic content limit the demographic, but for users in the Obagi physician-distribution ecosystem the formulation chemistry holds up.

Lip Therapy AHA + PHA Smoothing Micro-Peel

An ambitious clinical lip exfoliating treatment from Obagi's 2026 Lip Therapy protocol launch — three-acid complex (glycolic + lactic + gluconolactone PHA) with substantive lipid-and-emollient phase and multi-humectant architecture in a single fragrance-free formula. The clinical formulation depth distinguishes this from basic lip scrubs, and the pairing with the matching Lip Therapy SPF 30 supports comprehensive lip care. The $55 price and limited consumer availability through physician channel narrow the demographic, but for the target users this delivers genuine multi-mechanism lip rejuvenation.

Therapeutic Lotion

A genuinely elegant 5% benzoyl peroxide: dissolved rather than suspended, softened with squalane, dried to a matte finish and less gritty and stripping than drugstore gels of the same strength. It clears inflamed acne on the same timetable any benzoyl peroxide does. It is also a monograph OTC drug priced at $95 for 47 ml, and the evidence says 2.5% would do the job with less flaking, so the premium buys refinement, not results.

It is thick, waxy, white and hard to get out of the tube, its base carries comedogenic esters and two parabens, and the brand's own reviewers give it one star; melasma patients who understand the zinc keep buying it anyway, and they are not wrong.

Obagi spf moisturizer

HydraFactor Broad Spectrum SPF 30

A genuinely pleasant moisturising SPF 30, hyaluronate and antioxidants in a gel-cream that vanishes under makeup, which its users have loved for a decade and are now mourning as it disappears. It disappears for a reason: four organic filters including five percent oxybenzone, an ingredient the FDA found in plasma at levels far above its review threshold, that Hawaii has banned and that the industry has abandoned. Lovely to wear, dated to read, and not the sunscreen to buy in 2026.

The first at-home product to wear Obagi's Blue Peel name is a real peel done sensibly: 30% mandelic acid with 1% salicylic, applied with gauze, timed and rinsed, in single vials with the percentages on the box. Mandelic at this strength is the right acid for a self-applied peel, and the format keeps the dose honest. An ambitious physician-distributed clinical antioxidant serum combining THD ascorbate (stabilized vitamin C), encapsulated silymarin, acetyl hexapeptide-8, ergothioneine, dual polyphenol botanical antioxidants, and supporting salicylic acid keratolytic in a single multi-mechanism formula. The Obagi clinical positioning and the Dr. Suzan Obagi development provide credibility. The $158 price and the salicylic acid (not pregnancy-safe) narrow the demographic, but for users committed to physician-distributed clinical skincare, the formulation chemistry holds up.

Obagi ELASTIderm De-Puffing Eye Serum 14 ml rollerball tube with box Cold-Roller Caffeine Serum
Obagi eye cream

De-Puffing Eye Serum

A cold steel rollerball loaded with caffeine and Obagi's copper-zinc complex, and almost nothing else: it de-puffs on the spot, irritates no one and adds no hydration or brightening. For morning puffiness on tolerant or reactive eyes alike it is reliable; at $130 for 14 ml it is paying clinical-brand money for one fast trick and one slow, unproven-in-this-bottle promise.

Obagi-C C-Exfoliating Day Lotion 2 fl oz white pump bottle with gold label Morning Glycolic Step
Obagi moisturizer

C-Exfoliating Day Lotion

A competent morning glycolic acid moisturiser, with the acid high enough on the list to work, a stable vitamin C that tolerates it, and squalane and bisabolol to cushion daily use; it smooths and brightens over weeks and wears well under sunscreen. The acid percentage is a secret, the palmitate esters and fragrance are wrong for oily and reactive faces, and ninety dollars for two ounces is a physician-shelf price for a good ordinary AHA lotion.

Obagi moisturizer

Hydrate Luxe Moisture-Rich Cream

An intelligently formulated overnight moisturizer that pairs tara seed extract's sustained hydration release with biomimetic peptides for a cream that actually earns the "luxe" designation. Not cheap, but the multi-mechanism approach to overnight hydration and repair is more thoughtful than most night creams at this price.

Obagi ELASTIderm Firming Facial Serum 30 ml white pump bottle Elastin-Focused Clinical Firmer
Obagi serum

Firming Facial Serum

A rare firming serum with a real, published mechanism, a copper-zinc malonate complex shown on biopsy to prompt new elastin, wrapped in a thin alcohol-silicone vehicle that does little else. The bounce-back some users report after a couple of months is plausible; the instant tightness is a film. At $220 for 30 ml, it is a specialist purchase for people who want the elastin story and can afford to test it.

Obagi Professional-C Serum 20% dark amber glass bottle with dropper Maximum-Strength Clinical Vitamin C
Obagi serum

Professional-C Serum 20%

The most potent and most popular vitamin C serum in Obagi's Professional-C line, with the most complete supporting formula including sodium hyaluronate. Delivers dramatic brightening for oily and normal skin types — but the continued absence of ferulic acid prevents it from being the definitive clinical vitamin C serum.

Obagi SuzanObagiMD Retivance Skin Rejuvenating Complex 1 oz white pump bottle Tretinoin Refugee's Retinal
Obagi retinoid

Retivance Skin Rejuvenating Complex

A well-built 0.1% retinaldehyde for the patient who could not survive tretinoin: stabilised in an anhydrous oil-silicone base, cushioned with vitamin E, an oil-soluble vitamin C and chamomile-derived calming, and genuinely gentle for what it is. Dry, mature and sensitive skin gets real retinoid results with far less peeling. Oily skin will find it heavy, and $155 is a physician-brand price for a molecule now available for much less.

Obagi serum

Clinical Vitamin C+ Arbutin Brightening Serum

A radically minimalist vitamin C serum that pairs L-ascorbic acid with arbutin for dual-pathway brightening. Effective for evening skin tone, but the inclusion of alcohol denat. and SLS in a leave-on formula — at $92 for one ounce — asks you to pay luxury prices while accepting drugstore-era compromises.

C Clear Advanced Lotion

Obagi's Japan-market 2024 vitamin C treatment lotion — four-vitamin-C complex (L-ascorbic acid + three derivatives) plus seaweed antioxidant plus niacinamide and multi-HA support, designed for the multi-step Japanese routine. Genuinely depth-rich chemistry for the price tier, with the typical vitamin C tolerability caveats for sensitive skin.

Obagi-C Fx C-Clarifying Serum 1 oz amber dropper bottle with gold label System Centrepiece, Unstabilised
Obagi serum

FX C-Clarifying Serum Brightening Essence

The centrepiece of a physician-dispensed vitamin C system, stripped to eight ingredients: ten percent L-ascorbic acid, four percent arbutin, and a glycol-and-alcohol vehicle to carry them. Both actives are at working doses and both do what the literature says, brightening in weeks and softening spots in months; the vehicle is drying and old-fashioned, the serum yellows without a stabiliser, and one hundred and forty-five dollars is the top of the market for a formula this basic.

Obagi Nu-Derm Blend Fx 2 oz white stand-up tube with navy band Nu-Derm Step Five, No Hydroquinone
Obagi treatment

Blend Fx Skin Brightener & Blending Cream

A seven percent arbutin cream with lactic acid, vitamin C and vitamin E that fades sun spots and old marks slowly and reliably on tolerant skin, standing in for the hydroquinone Blender at step five of Nu-Derm Fx. Its ingredient list is identical to the brand's C-Therapy Night Cream, its sulfate-emulsified, sulfite-preserved base dates from the hydroquinone era, and one hundred and twenty-five dollars is a lot for one formula sold under two names.

A gentle phytic acid lotion designed to be the exfoliant that does not fight tretinoin, and inside the Nu-Derm System it does that job well. Taken out of the system it is a mild, fragrance-free morning exfoliant in a plain emollient base at a $105 price that only makes sense as a step in a regimen. Dry and sensitive skin on a supervised programme will value it; almost everyone else will wonder what it did.

A serious brightening treatment built around one of the highest OTC arbutin concentrations available. Slower than hydroquinone but gentler and safer for long-term use — if you have the patience for a 3-6 month timeline. The SLS and parabens in the formula feel outdated for the $125 asking price.

30% Vitamin C Microdermabrasion Facial Polish & Mask

An ingenious idea in an unfriendly jar: thirty percent L-ascorbic acid kept stable in wax and used as its own grit, delivering a real polished glow in one fifteen-minute sitting. The paste is a chore to spread, the alumina crystals punish a heavy hand, the fragrance is a needless irritant on freshly buffed skin, and ninety-five dollars for a rinse-off is a price the brand's own 3.7-star reviewers are visibly arguing with.

A smartly targeted neck-and-chest serum that treats the décolleté as a pigment problem as well as a texture one, stacking alpha-arbutin and niacinamide high with a mild retinoid ester and the ELASTIderm mineral complex that has real biopsy data. It brightens a mottled chest and softens crepiness over three months; alcohol sits fourth and there is fragrance where none was needed, sagging barely moves, and two hundred and sixty dollars is the highest price anyone charges for these ingredients.
