A good active in a bad base: seven percent arbutin, the strongest hydroquinone-free brightening dose in Obagi's range, carried in a 2005 cream emulsified with sodium lauryl sulfate and preserved with sulfite, BHT and two parabens. Long-term users credit it with years of even skin and the brand's own reviewers rate it under three stars, and both are right; one hundred and twenty dollars buys the arbutin and everything wrong with the vehicle.

The soft option in a hard-edged range: a gentle almond-oil lotion with vitamin E and the plant cytokinin kinetin, which has a modest trial record for photoaged, reactive skin, plus a little oil-soluble vitamin C and a peptide near the tail of the list. It calms and softens dry, rosacea-prone faces and improves texture slowly; it is not a vitamin C serum in any meaningful sense, and one hundred and thirty dollars for six weeks of it is a physician-shelf price for a pleasant lotion.
