Paula's Choice
More about Paula's ChoiceThe story behind Paula's Choice Read the full story
Before she sold a single product, Paula Begoun spent years as the skincare industry's most feared critic. Working as a makeup artist and beauty journalist, she turned her frustration with marketing hype into a series of consumer guides, most famously Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, that dissected ingredient lists product by product and earned her the nickname 'the Cosmetics Cop.' She built a national following by telling people which expensive creams were a waste of money.
Founding a brand was the logical, if risky, next step: if she knew what good formulas looked like, she could make them. Paula's Choice launched in 1995 out of Seattle, built around the same jargon-free, evidence-first philosophy that powered her books. The pitch was radical for the era, with no fragrance for fragrance's sake, no fearmongering, and full transparency about what each ingredient does and at what concentration.
The brand's defining product became the 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, a leave-on salicylic acid treatment that turned into a cult object and remains a genuine category benchmark. Around it grew a deep, unglamorous catalog of antioxidants, retinoids, and acids sold on data rather than packaging. In 2016 private equity firm TA Associates took a majority stake, and in 2021 Unilever acquired the brand in a deal reported around two billion dollars, folding it into the conglomerate's prestige portfolio.
The honest read: Paula's Choice is one of the most reliably formulated mass skincare lines available, and the company still publishes its reasoning more openly than most. The trade-off is aesthetic, with textures and packaging that are functional rather than luxurious, and a relentlessly clinical tone that can feel joyless next to flashier brands. But you're paying for the formula, not the bottle, and the formulas hold up. For anyone who wants effective actives without the marketing theater their founder spent a career exposing, it's hard to argue with.
