Legend dates the discovery of this water to the 14th century, when the knight Bertrand du Guesclin is said to have stopped at a spring in central France and watched his eczema-stricken horse wade in and emerge with its skin healed. Whether or not the horse cooperated, the spring's reputation for treating skin grew real over the centuries. In the 1600s a physician to Henri IV and Louis XIII conducted the first analysis of the water and identified its unusually high selenium content alongside a low overall mineral load, the chemical fingerprint still cited today. Napoleon Bonaparte reportedly built a thermal hospital at the site so soldiers could treat their skin conditions, and the French Academy of Medicine recognized the waters near the turn of the 20th century, with a dedicated center for managing eczema and psoriasis opening in 1905 and formal spa-town status following in 1913. The village had become a working capital of hydro-dermatology long before it lent its name to a product line. That therapeutic heritage shaped the catalog's logic: rather than chasing fashion, the range is organized around clinical problems. Cicaplast Baume B5 targets compromised, post-procedure, and cracked skin with panthenol and madecassoside; the Anthelios franchise pushed photostable, high-protection sunscreen filters into elegant textures; Effaclar built a system around acne-prone and oily skin; and Lipikar addresses very dry, eczema-prone bodies. Each line reads like a dermatology-clinic shelf translated for the pharmacy aisle. The thermal water threads through nearly all of it as a soothing carrier and brand signature, but the genuine work happens in the chosen actives layered around it, the reason the products keep turning up in dermatologists' own recommendations across Europe and well beyond it.

More about La Roche-Posay
La Roche-Posay was founded in 1975 by pharmacist René Levayer around the selenium-rich thermal spring water of its namesake French town, and has been part of L'Oréal's Active Cosmetics Division since 1989.
It is one of the most dermatologist-recommended skincare brands, with well-researched, clinically tested formulas, though its signature thermal water functions more as a soothing heritage element than a proven active.
