The story behind The INKEY List Read the full story

It started as a LinkedIn message. Mark Curry, who'd worked in product development, wanted to build a skincare brand and direct-messaged Colette Laxton, a marketer he'd known from their time at Boots, to ask her to join him. The two reconnected, went into business together — and, in a detail they cheerfully own, eventually married. Their "LinkedIn love story" produced one of the most quietly influential affordable-skincare brands of its generation.

The INKEY List launched in the UK in September 2018 with a deceptively simple premise: skincare buyers were being sold confusion, and what they actually needed was knowledge. Each product would be named for its key ingredient, explain in plain English what it did and didn't do, and cost a price — most under $15 — that didn't punish curiosity. The packaging itself doubled as a primer, listing what an ingredient is, who it's for and how to use it, so a first-timer could build a routine without a chemistry degree or a luxury budget.

The bet paid off immediately. Rather than launch into the mass aisle, the founders deliberately placed the brand in prestige retailers, where affordable didn't have to read as cheap. Demand was startling: their first retailer reportedly burned through six months of planned stock in about four weeks, and the brand expanded quickly across the UK, the US and beyond, building a sprawling catalogue of targeted single-active treatments.

The honest read is genuinely positive. The INKEY List does what it says: well-chosen, well-studied actives — hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinol, exfoliating acids — in straightforward formulas at prices that make experimentation low-risk. You're not getting cutting-edge delivery systems or proprietary complexes, and some formulas are more basic than the marketing suggests, but that's the point and the price reflects it. For beginners building a first routine, or anyone who wants effective actives without the markup, it's one of the more honest propositions in the category — knowledge-first, and refreshingly unbothered about pretending to be more than it is.

Glycerin Gentle Purifying Cleanser

A genuinely excellent everyday gentle cleanser — 20% glycerin and a 3% centella complex in a sulfate-free, fragrance-free gel that cleans thoroughly without stripping. Broadly suitable, very low irritation risk, deliberately unexciting, and outstanding value at around $13. The kind of unglamorous product that quietly earns a permanent spot in a routine.

The INKEY List cleanser

Hydrating Cream-to-Milk Cleanser

A genuinely well-formulated drugstore cream-to-milk cleanser combining 5% rice milk complex, dual hyaluronic acid, high-position glycerin, and gentle non-sulfate surfactants in a National Eczema Association certified, fragrance-free formula at $19 for 240ml. The NEA certification reflects clinical validation that drugstore cleansers rarely achieve. The comedogenic emollient content limits fungal-acne suitability, but for the broader sensitive-to-dry-skin demographic this is among the most thoughtful drugstore cleansers currently available.

The INKEY List serum

10% Azelaic Acid Serum for Redness Relief

One of the best-behaved cosmetic azelaic serums on the market: a declared 10 percent in a smooth gel that absorbs invisibly and does not pill, a real 0.3 percent allantoin to blunt the first-week sting, and a sheer green tint that cancels pink on contact — fragrance-free, oil-free, pregnancy-safe, $20. It calms redness within a couple of weeks and fades marks over two months. It tingles at first, 10 percent is slower than prescription strengths, and the four-day claim is the brand's own; but for redness-prone skin that has given up on azelaic acid because of the texture, this is the one to try again with.

The INKEY List moisturizer

10% Urea Moisturizer

A pharmacy-strength urea cream with a face-cream texture: a declared 10 percent urea and 1 percent colloidal oat in a light, fragrance-free triglyceride-squalane base, for $22. On flaky, rough, winter-tight skin it clears the flakes in days and keeps the face hydrated between applications — the one moisturiser in the brand's range that treats dryness rather than just topping it up. It prickles on cracked or reactive skin, it is too much for oily faces and not enough alone for the driest, and the 48-hour claim is the brand's own test; but for scaly, stubborn dryness on a face, it is exactly the right tool.

More about The INKEY List

Founded in 2018 by Colette Laxton and Mark Curry, The INKEY List is a UK brand built on affordable, single-ingredient-led formulas and plain-language education, with most products priced under about $15.

Its credibility rests on transparency and well-studied actives at accessible prices rather than on proprietary technology or large in-house clinical trials.
