Fation Hy-cica Biome Calming Condition Pad white tub of 80 pads
Good choice for Sensitivity
What Makes This Different

The essence is 46 percent centella extract by the brand's own label, reinforced with the four purified centella triterpenes, a ferment complex and gentle PHAs, all without fragrance. Few toner pads combine this much centella with such a short, low-irritant formula.

Fation Hy-cica Biome Calming Condition Pad Review

Sensitive Skin Cica Pad
toner pad dermatologist developed Paraben Free Fungal Acne Safe Not Cruelty Free

One of the gentlest, most centella-heavy toner pads around: a fragrance-free essence that is 46 percent centella extract, with purified triterpenes, ferments and mild PHAs. It is a very good daily pad for sensitive, red or acne-prone skin. The drawbacks are price per pad and a thin US review record.

Full Review

Most toner pads start their ingredient list with water. Fation's Hy-cica Biome Calming Condition Pad starts with centella asiatica extract, and the brand prints the dose next to it: 460,000ppm, or 46 percent of the essence. Water comes second. That single detail tells you most of what you need to know about this pad. It is designed to deliver as much centella as possible to skin that is red, reactive or recovering, and to do very little else that might upset it.

Fation is the sensitive-skin label of Dong-A Pharm, a Korean pharmaceutical company, and the pad reads like it was designed by people who spend time thinking about irritated skin. After the centella extract and water come butylene glycol, methylpropanediol and hexanediol — simple solvents and humectants — and then a 3,000ppm dose of lactobacillus ferment. Next are the four purified triterpenes found in centella: asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassic acid and madecassoside. These are the molecules usually credited with centella's wound-healing and anti-inflammatory effects, and including them alongside the raw extract is a sensible way to make the soothing effect less dependent on how the plant was grown and extracted.

The 'biome' part of the name comes from a cluster of ferments and lysates: bifida, lactococcus and lactobacillus. These are not live bacteria. They are fermentation products and cell fragments that some research suggests may support a balanced skin surface and calm inflammation. The evidence is still early, but they are gentle ingredients and fit the pad's purpose.

Then come the pad's quietly clever details. Lactobionic acid and gluconolactone are polyhydroxy acids — larger, slower-penetrating cousins of glycolic acid that smooth the skin surface with much less irritation, and which also act as humectants. A small amount of protease, an enzyme, adds a gentle surface-smoothing effect. Panthenol, dipotassium glycyrrhizate (a licorice-derived anti-irritant), niacinamide, ceramide NP and beta-glucan appear further down, reinforcing the barrier-support theme. There is no fragrance, no essential oil, no alcohol and no silicone.

In use, the pads are thin and lightly textured, soaked in a watery, faintly green essence. They feel cool on the skin, and most people with sensitive skin will feel no tingling at all. You can swipe a pad across the face after cleansing as a toner step, or lay it on particularly red or irritated areas for a few minutes as a mini-mask, which is where the high centella content feels most useful. The skin is left hydrated, calm and without residue, ready for serum and moisturiser.

Who is it for? Sensitive skin, obviously, but also acne-prone skin that is inflamed or recovering from breakouts, skin irritated by retinoids or strong actives, and anyone who wants a very gentle daily smoothing step. The PHAs are mild enough that the pad can usually be used before a retinoid at night; people with very reactive skin can simply use it in the morning. It is oil-free and free of the ingredients typically flagged for fungal acne.

What it is not is a treatment for acne or pigmentation. There are no salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or brightening actives at meaningful levels. The niacinamide and ceramide are present but near the end of the list. This is a calming, supportive product, and it is best judged on that basis.

It is worth describing how it fits around other steps, because pads are easy to overuse. The best time to reach for one is the moment after cleansing when skin feels tight, warm or blotchy — after a hot shower, after shaving or a workout, or the morning after trying a new active. Swiped gently, a single pad covers the whole face and neck; for particularly angry areas, tearing a pad in half and leaving the halves on each cheek for a few minutes makes better use of the centella-rich essence than a quick wipe. Because the PHAs and protease are mild, daily use is realistic, but there is no benefit in scrubbing: pressing the pad in delivers the same soothing effect with less friction. On days when skin is calm and comfortable, the pad can simply be skipped; it is a tool for flare-ups and recovery as much as a daily ritual.

The main drawback is value. At roughly twenty-nine dollars for 80 pads at the US retailer where it is currently listed, you are paying about thirty-seven cents a pad. That is reasonable for a formula of this quality, but it is not cheap, and using two pads a day doubles the cost. The pad has also been delisted from Olive Young's global store, which limits where US shoppers can find it and at what price. A refill version exists, which helps.

US review data is also thin; the one rating on YesStyle is positive, and the product has a better-established following in Korea. Fation's reputation with its Nosca9 line suggests it knows how to formulate for troubled skin, but independent feedback on this pad in the US remains limited.

The bottom line is simple. If you have sensitive, red or easily irritated skin and like the convenience of pads, this is one of the best-formulated calming options you can buy, with a clearly disclosed centella dose, a smart supporting cast and nothing that is likely to cause trouble. Just be prepared to pay a little more for that gentleness.

Formula

Key Ingredients

The hero actives that drive this product's performance.

IngredientFunctionEvidence
Centella Asiatica Extract (46% (460,000ppm, brand-declared)) The pads are soaked in an essence that is nearly half centella extract by weight, displacing most of the water; that makes the soothing, redness-calming centella the dominant ingredient every time a pad is swept or left on the cheeks. Not applicable for Sensitivity
Madecassoside + Asiaticoside + Asiatic & Madecassic Acid The four purified centella triterpenes back up the raw extract with the molecules thought to drive its wound-healing and barrier-calming activity, so the formula is not relying on extract quality alone. Not applicable for Sensitivity
Lactobacillus Ferment + Bifida, Lactococcus and Lactobacillus Ferment Lysates (0.3% Lactobacillus Ferment (3,000ppm, brand-declared)) The 'biome' half of the name: a cluster of bacterial ferments and lysates positioned to support a calm, balanced skin surface; the evidence is early, but the combination is gentle and suits the pad's soothing purpose. Not yet assessed
Lactobionic Acid + Gluconolactone Two polyhydroxy acids, with a small amount of protease enzyme, give the textured pad a very mild smoothing action — far gentler than glycolic or salicylic pads, which is why this can be used daily on reactive skin. Not yet assessed
Panthenol Placed mid-list, panthenol adds humectant hydration and barrier support, making the pad as much a moisturising step as a toning one. Not yet assessed
Ceramide NP + Niacinamide Small amounts of a skin-identical ceramide and niacinamide near the end of the list round out the barrier-support theme; they are finishing touches rather than main actives. Established mechanism for Compromised Skin Barrier · established mechanism

Layering Tips

Swipe or press a pad onto clean skin as the toner step, or leave a pad on red or irritated patches for a few minutes as a mini-mask; the PHAs are mild enough to sit under a retinoid at night, though very reactive skin should alternate them.

Results Timeline

A cool, calming feel and visibly less flushed skin shortly after use. Over 1-2 weeks, redness and minor irritation tend to settle and the surface feels smoother from the PHAs. Barrier comfort continues to improve over about a month of daily use.

Science & Expert Perspective

The Science

Centella asiatica is one of the most studied botanicals in dermatology, and its activity is generally attributed to four pentacyclic triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. Laboratory and clinical studies have shown these compounds can promote wound healing, stimulate collagen synthesis, reduce inflammatory markers and improve barrier function; madecassoside in particular has shown anti-inflammatory effects relevant to sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. This pad is notable for combining a very high concentration of centella extract — 46 percent of the essence by the brand's declaration — with the purified triterpenes, which helps standardise the active content.

Lactobionic acid and gluconolactone are polyhydroxy acids (PHAs). Their larger molecular size means slower penetration and less stinging than alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, while still loosening surface corneocytes; they are also humectants and antioxidants, and studies have found PHAs suitable for sensitive skin, including rosacea. Protease enzymes add a mild proteolytic smoothing effect.

The ferment components — lactobacillus ferment (declared at 3,000ppm) and several bacterial lysates — belong to the emerging category of postbiotics. Early research suggests some lysates may reduce skin sensitivity and support barrier recovery, although data remain limited and product-specific.

Panthenol has solid trial evidence for improving hydration and supporting barrier repair. Dipotassium glycyrrhizate, derived from licorice, has anti-inflammatory activity. Niacinamide and ceramide NP are present at low levels but align with evidence-based barrier care. The absence of fragrance and alcohol substantially reduces sensitisation risk, which matters most for the skin types this pad targets.

Dermatologist Perspective

Centella-based products are frequently suggested in clinical settings for sensitive, irritated or post-procedure skin, and a fragrance-free, alcohol-free formula like this aligns well with standard advice for rosacea, eczema-adjacent sensitivity and retinoid irritation. Polyhydroxy acids are generally considered the most tolerable chemical exfoliants for reactive skin, so their inclusion here is appropriate for gentle daily smoothing. Dermatologists would typically position this pad as a supportive, calming step rather than a treatment: it can reduce visible redness and discomfort, but acne, rosacea and pigmentation disorders still require targeted therapies such as azelaic acid, topical retinoids or prescription options. For patients who find toners or pads irritating, pressing rather than swiping reduces friction. Microbiome-focused ingredients are an area of active research, and their benefits here should be considered promising rather than proven.

Guidance

Usage & Recommendations

How to Use

After cleansing, take one pad and sweep it gently over the face and neck, following the direction of the texture on the pad, or press it onto the skin instead of swiping if your skin is very sensitive. For stubborn redness or irritation, leave a pad on the affected area, such as the cheeks, for three to five minutes as a mini-mask. Pat any remaining essence into the skin, then follow with serum and moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning. It can be used morning and evening. Always close the lid tightly to keep the pads from drying out, and lift pads with clean, dry fingers.

Value Assessment

At about twenty-nine dollars for 80 pads, the Fation pad costs roughly thirty-seven cents per use, which is on the higher side for toner pads. The formulation justifies a premium over basic pads: a 46 percent centella essence, purified triterpenes, ferments and PHAs in a fragrance-free base is a genuinely well-considered combination, and Fation's pharmaceutical parentage is a reasonable basis for trust. The value is reduced by limited US availability and a thin review record. For sensitive skin that benefits from daily calming, it is worth the cost; for resilient skin, a cheaper toner may do.

Who Should Buy

People with sensitive, red, acne-prone or retinoid-irritated skin who want a fragrance-free, deeply soothing toner pad with gentle smoothing, and who value a clearly disclosed centella dose from a pharmaceutical-backed brand.

Who Should Skip

Budget-focused shoppers with resilient skin who don't need intensive calming, and anyone seeking a pad that actively treats acne or pigmentation. Those who prefer strong exfoliation will find the PHAs too mild.

Background

The Story Behind This Product

Fation comes from Dong-A Pharm, a Korean pharmaceutical company, and positions itself around sensitive and troubled skin. The Hy-Cica Biome pad is its second-generation toner pad, relaunched with a stronger centella-and-microbiome ('Cica-BP') complex.

About Fation Established Brand (5–20 years)

Fation is the sensitive-skin line of Korean pharmaceutical company Dong-A Pharm, launched in 2018 and best known for its Nosca9 blemish range. It prints its centella and ferment doses on the label but has not published clinical results for this pad.

Myth vs. Reality

Common Myths

Myth

Toner pads always exfoliate aggressively.

Reality

This pad uses lactobionic acid and gluconolactone — gentle polyhydroxy acids — plus a small amount of protease. It smooths the surface mildly and is designed primarily to calm, not peel.

Myth

Probiotic skincare adds live bacteria to your skin.

Reality

The ferments and lysates in this pad are non-living ingredients derived from bacteria. Their proposed role is to support a calm skin environment, and the evidence for that is still early.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much centella is in the Fation Hy-cica Biome pad?

Fation declares 460,000ppm of centella asiatica extract — 46 percent of the essence — as the first ingredient, ahead of water. It is also reinforced with madecassoside, asiaticoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Does the Fation cica pad exfoliate?

Only gently. It contains two polyhydroxy acids, lactobionic acid and gluconolactone, plus a little protease enzyme. The effect is mild smoothing rather than the stronger exfoliation of AHA or BHA pads.

Is the Hy-cica Biome pad fragrance-free?

Yes. The formula has no added fragrance or essential oils, which makes it a good fit for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.

Can I use the Fation calming pads with retinol?

Usually yes. The PHAs are mild and the centella and panthenol are soothing, so many people use a pad before a retinoid. If your skin is very reactive, use the pad in the morning and the retinoid at night.

Are Fation Hy-cica pads good for acne-prone skin?

They are a good supportive step. They are oil-free and soothing and can calm post-breakout redness, but they contain no acne actives like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Is the Fation calming pad safe during pregnancy?

Its ingredients — centella, ferments, PHAs, panthenol, niacinamide and ceramide — are not among those typically restricted in pregnancy.
