Bioderma
More about BiodermaThe story behind Bioderma Read the full story
Walk backstage at a fashion show and one pink-capped bottle outnumbers almost everything else on the makeup-artist trolley, bought in bulk to wipe faces clean between looks. That unbought, professional word-of-mouth is what quietly turned a French pharmacy staple into a global cult object before it was ever a mass-market habit, and it explains a reputation built on use rather than advertising.
The company grew from a deliberately contrarian premise. Rather than the prevailing dermo-cosmetic logic of stripping and overriding the skin, its founder argued for working with the skin's own biology and its relationship to its environment, a principle he named ecobiology. That same founder built the brand alongside a sister venture, Institut Esthederm, and later folded Bioderma, Esthederm and Etat Pur into a single group, even transferring the assets into a foundation structure between the mid-2010s to preserve the company's independence and positioning rather than sell out.
The defining product was almost an act of subtraction. The micellar cleansing water, sold as Créaline at home in France and Sensibio almost everywhere else, used tiny micelles to lift dirt and makeup without rinsing or harsh surfactants, gentle enough for the most reactive skin and widely credited with bringing micellar technology to the mass market. At peak it was producing tens of millions of bottles a year.
From that hero the catalogue branched into targeted families, Atoderm for dry and atopic-prone skin, Sébium for oily and breakout-prone, Hydrabio for dehydration, Cicabio for compromised and healing skin, each carrying the same restraint into a specific skin state. The honest read is that Bioderma sits among the most credible names in the French-pharmacy tier; the micellar water earns its fame as a gentle first cleanse but is best followed by a proper wash, and ecobiology functions more as a guiding philosophy than a discrete clinical claim, though the underlying research is real.

More about Bioderma
Bioderma was founded in 1977 by pharmacist Jean-Noël Thorel in Aix-en-Provence and is part of the NAOS group, developing its formulas through its CEREDAP research center, dozens of patent families, and collaborations with French scientific institutions.
Its 1995 Sensibio H2O helped popularize micellar water, and the brand is widely recommended for sensitive skin.
