The pitch came out of a frustration repeated in exam rooms hundreds of times. A dermatologist would tell a patient exactly which boring, foundational products would actually help — a good cleanser, a real moisturizer, a barrier ointment — and then watch them walk out and buy something flashier, pricier, and worse, because the sensible options were either too expensive or too clinical to feel desirable. The brand was built to close that gap: take the unglamorous staples a doctor genuinely recommends and make them elegant and cheap enough that recommending them feels effortless.
The founder built her audience before she built a product. Across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok she had amassed hundreds of thousands of followers by doing something rare for a working physician — explaining skincare patiently, debunking trends, and refusing to oversell. That credibility, the position she describes as standing between the dermatological world and the social-media one, is exactly what made her attractive to the Los Angeles incubator that partnered on the launch, whose founder framed her as bringing a point of view the category lacked.
The debut in mid-2023 was deliberately spare: a small handful of products, all priced low, all fragrance-free, all aimed at the skin barrier rather than a buzzy hero active. The philosophy she repeats is "basic plus" — proven, dermatologist-staple ingredients given better textures and smarter formulation, priced so the same product could be recommended to a cash patient and a Medicaid patient alike. A high-glycerin cleanser, a urea moisturizing milk, and a petrolatum utility ointment anchored the range, which has since grown into serums and barrier treatments.
The honest read is that this is one of the more credible dermatologist-founded brands precisely because it refuses the usual playbook — no fear-mongering, no miracle claims, no luxury markup. The only real caveat is youth: a couple of years on the market is not much of an independent track record. But for accessible, no-drama basics, it does what it says.

More about Prequel
Founded in 2023 by board-certified dermatologist Dr.
Sam Ellis in partnership with the brand incubator The Center; its formulas use established dermatological ingredients and are genuinely dermatologist-developed, though as a brand only a few years old it has limited long-term independent validation of its specific products.
