It began as an argument about price. A former cosmetics researcher named Seo Young-pil launched a Korean website called Beautynet around the turn of the millennium to prove a point: that there was no good reason for cosmetics to cost what they did relative to what went into making them. Early products famously sold for around 3,300 won, roughly the cost of postage, with the rest of the value essentially given away. The point landed hard, and the brand that grew out of it took the name Missha.
In 2002 it opened its first physical store in front of Ewha Womans University, a deliberate beachhead among style-conscious students, and in doing so helped pioneer Korea's low-cost 'road shop' model of fast, affordable, single-brand beauty stores that competitors rushed to imitate. From that scrappy origin the brand scaled into a national fixture, posting hundreds of billions of won in annual sales within a decade.
Its place in beauty history, though, was secured by a single category. The M Perfect Cover BB Cream helped carry BB cream, a hybrid of skincare, sun protection, and light coverage, far beyond Korea, riding the Hallyu wave of K-dramas and pop until cumulative units passed well over a hundred million. The other pillar is Time Revolution, built on fermented ingredients, whose First Treatment Essence earned a devoted following as an accessible answer to far pricier prestige essences. More recently the brand has leaned into Korean heritage storytelling, fermenting ingredients in traditional pottery to reinforce a tradition-meets-science identity.
The honest read: Missha's enduring strength is value and accessibility, not clinical pedigree. After more than two decades it carries the cultural weight of a genuine K-beauty institution, but it markets mass-market cosmetics rather than publishing the kind of independent studies behind a dermatological brand. Some heroes are genuinely good for the money, especially the essences and cushions; others trade on hype and Hallyu glamour. Taken for what it is, an affordable, historically important everyday brand, Missha remains an easy place to start a routine.
