Hyaluronic Acid Can Actually Dehydrate Your Skin (Here's When)
The internet's favorite hydrator has a counterintuitive dark side — in dry air, a humectant with nothing to seal it can pull water out of your skin instead of into it.
It packs a long list of hydrators, eight hyaluronic acid forms, polyglutamic acid, hydroxyethyl urea and panthenol, plus nine peptides and glutathione into single-use overnight sachets, so the formula stays fresh and portioned. The Korean name promises 'mulgwang', water-glow, rather than whitening.
A simple, effective overnight hydrator in handy single-use sachets: glycerin, panthenol and a stack of hyaluronic acid forms under a thin silicone seal leave skin plump and dewy by morning. The 'Brightening' in the name is a translation of water-glow, not a spot-fading claim, and the nine peptides are low-dose extras. Fragrance is the main caution.
This assessment draws on about 131 Olive Young Global reviews and the current manufacturer ingredient list for the sachet version. Older reviews and ingredient lists online describe the discontinued Black Sleeping Pack, which had a different formula, so they were not used.

As a maskNot judged: what a mask is for — works within its wear time, benefit outlasts the mask, comes off cleanly — cannot yet be measured from the ingredient list (only intensity without injury can).
Where our review and the verdict differ. The review below was written on the formulation and the published trials; the verdicts above apply the stricter standing test in our methodology — an active earns a recommendation only with guideline or regulatory standing for the concern. Where the two disagree, the verdict is DermApproved’s position.
A verdict is DermApproved’s assessment of how well a product’s ingredients fit a concern — never a claim about what the product treats. Evidence dots and collected reviews sit beside it and are never blended in. Rules 0.5.1 · evidence table ev-2026.09-r228 · how we decide
Read the Korean line on the box and this product makes a different promise from the English one. 제이준 블랙 물광 하이드로 슬리핑팩 translates roughly as JAYJUN black water-glow hydro sleeping pack. Mulgwang, water-glow, is the Korean beauty ideal of skin so hydrated it looks lit from within. The English word Brightening, which many shoppers read as fading dark spots, is a looser translation. That matters, because the formula delivers on the Korean promise and does not really attempt the English one.
The ingredient list is built for water-glow. Glycerin is second, followed by butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol and propanediol, all humectants. A polymer gel gives the bouncy texture, and a thin silicone and ester layer from dimethicone, isohexadecane, butylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate, hexyl laurate and stearyl dimethicone slows water loss overnight. Hydroxyethyl urea, a gentle urea derivative, and panthenol add more humectancy. Glacier water, carbonated water and sea water appear next; they are mostly storytelling, but they do no harm.
Then comes the collection. Eight hyaluronic acid forms appear in a row, joined by polyglutamic acid, followed by nine peptides: a Syn-Ake-style dipeptide, palmitoyl tripeptide-5, copper tripeptide-1, acetyl hexapeptide-8, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 and two oligopeptides. Glutathione, ceramide NP and adenosine close out the actives. It is an impressive list to read, but these ingredients sit in the lower half of the formula, after the preservative-boosting glycols and just before sodium polyacrylate. They add some supportive benefit and plenty of marketing appeal, but the hydration you feel comes from the glycerin and the seal above them.
That is not a criticism; glycerin under an occlusive film is exactly how an overnight pack should work. The result is skin that looks noticeably plumper and glossier in the morning, which is what a sleeping pack is for. Adenosine near the end supports Korea's anti-wrinkle functional claim, and the ceramide and lecithin give a small nod to barrier support.
There is no real brightening active. There is no niacinamide, vitamin C, arbutin or tranexamic acid. Glutathione does appear, and it is sometimes marketed for lightening, but its topical evidence is limited and the amount here is small. Anyone buying this to fade post-acne marks or melasma should look elsewhere.
The format is the other selling point. Instead of a jar, the pack comes as thirty 4 millilitre stick sachets. That keeps the formula sealed until use, avoids fingers in a tub, and makes it easy to travel with. The downside is that 4 millilitres is more than most faces need, so either you use a generous layer or you clip the sachet and use the rest the next night. Once opened, the manufacturer says to use it immediately, so do not leave an opened sachet for long.
The texture is a clear gel that feels cool, spreads thin and dries to a slightly slick finish without much tack. It does not transfer heavily onto pillows, and oily or combination skin can often use it alone instead of a night cream. Dry skin will prefer it over a moisturiser. JAYJUN recommends rinsing it off in the morning with warm water.
Fragrance is the last ingredient, so the pack is lightly scented, which is the main caution for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. Otherwise, the formula is gentle: no essential oils, no drying alcohol, no acids. Macadamia oil and polysorbate 80 are present in small amounts, which together with the fatty esters make it less than ideal for people managing fungal acne, although the risk is modest.
Where it fits best is in a routine that already contains something drying. A retinoid serum, a benzoyl peroxide wash or an exfoliating toner a few nights a week can leave skin feeling tight, and a humectant-heavy overnight gel is a comfortable way to rebalance without adding a heavy cream. It is also useful after a long flight, a day of wind or heating, or any time skin looks flat and papery. For skin that is already well moisturised, the visible difference will be smaller, and a regular night cream may be all that is needed.
One practical note: because the gel sets to a slick film rather than soaking in completely, apply it as the final step and give it a few minutes before lying down. That keeps more of it on your face and less on the pillowcase.
The price is reasonable. Holiholic lists the box of thirty at eighteen dollars fifty, and Olive Young Global's list price of twenty-eight dollars is frequently halved. At well under a dollar per night, it is an easy, affordable way to add an overnight hydration step, particularly for travel.
Around 131 Olive Young reviewers have weighed in, with the main praise being morning plumpness and the convenience of the sachets. Complaints centre on the scent and the size of each sachet.
This sachet version replaces an earlier Real Water Brightening Black Sleeping Pack, which retailers such as iHerb now list as discontinued, and the ingredient list has changed substantially. Reviews and ingredient analyses of the older pack no longer apply.
Put simply, this is a well-made overnight hydration gel in a practical format. Buy it for dewy, plump skin in the morning, not for spot fading, and skip it if fragrance bothers your skin.

Squeeze one sachet over the evening moisturiser, or in its place on oily skin, as a final layer; rinse off in the morning.
Overnight: plumper, dewier-looking skin in the morning. Over one to two weeks of regular use, dehydrated skin feels more comfortable; it does not fade dark spots.
Overnight or sleeping masks work mainly through humectants and occlusion: humectants such as glycerin, butylene glycol and propanediol draw water into the stratum corneum, and a thin film of silicones and esters reduces transepidermal water loss while the skin is not exposed to wind, heat or makeup. Glycerin has among the strongest evidence of any cosmetic humectant for improving stratum corneum hydration and barrier recovery, and here it appears second on the list.
Hydroxyethyl urea is a urea derivative that acts as a humectant without urea's keratolytic sting; panthenol is converted to pantothenic acid in the skin and supports hydration and comfort. The eight hyaluronic acid forms, from high-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate to crosspolymer and acetylated forms, add surface film and water-binding, alongside polyglutamic acid.
The peptide set includes signal peptides such as palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 and palmitoyl tripeptide-5, the neurotransmitter-inhibiting acetyl hexapeptide-8 and copper tripeptide-1. Several have small clinical studies at defined concentrations, but these typically use levels higher than would be expected this far down an ingredient list.
Adenosine supports Korea's anti-wrinkle functional claim; it has shown modest wrinkle improvement in controlled studies of adenosine-containing creams. Topical glutathione has limited evidence for lightening, and none at the likely concentration in this product.
Clinicians generally see overnight masks as a moisturiser in a different format: a humectant-rich gel with a light occlusive is a reasonable way to address dehydration, especially in dry climates or alongside drying treatments such as retinoids or isotretinoin. Dermatologists commonly stress that a product sold as 'brightening' should not be relied on for melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation unless it contains an active with evidence for pigment, such as azelaic acid, niacinamide or tranexamic acid. Fragrance is a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, so patients with sensitive skin are usually advised to choose unscented products.
Finish the evening routine by squeezing one sachet into your palm and spreading an even layer over the face, avoiding the eye area. Oily skin can use it as the only night moisturiser; dry skin can apply it over a cream. Leave it on overnight and rinse off with warm water the next morning before your usual routine. If a sachet is too generous, clip it closed and finish it the following night rather than keeping it longer.
At $18.50 from Holiholic for thirty 4 ml sachets, or Olive Young Global's frequent sale price against its $28 list, this pack costs well under a dollar per night. That is good value for a well-built overnight hydrating gel in a hygienic format. The long list of peptides adds little extra value, since they appear in small amounts. JAYJUN's established track record in sheet masks and hydration supports the formula's quality.
Anyone with dehydrated, dull-looking or normal-to-combination skin who wants a light overnight gel that leaves skin plump and dewy by morning, and who likes the hygiene and portability of single-use sachets.
People with fragrance sensitivity or reactive rosacea, and anyone hoping a 'brightening' sleeping mask will fade dark spots or melasma, will be better served by an unscented moisturiser and a proven pigment treatment.

The Hydro Sleeping Pack updates JAYJUN's earlier Real Water Brightening Black Sleeping Pack, which retailers now list as discontinued, with a new formula and a thirty-sachet box for the Real Water line.
JAYJUN is a Korean brand founded in 2013 that built its name on multi-step sheet masks before widening into toners, creams and sun care. It has broad retail distribution in Asia and the US, but its formulas rely on familiar humectants and botanicals rather than published clinical research on its own products.
