Before there was a cosmetics company, there was an acne information website, started by Hifumi Ogawa in her twenties as a kind of public notebook for someone who could not get her own skin under control. That habit hardened into a small venture in 2004, an acne-focused outfit often rendered as Akunerabo, the direct predecessor to the brand that would follow a few years later. The founding frustration was concrete: adult acne and atopic dermatitis that reacted to nearly everything, including, maddeningly, the very products meant to help.
The central conviction that emerged was almost contrarian for color cosmetics: that makeup itself could be gentle enough to leave on troubled skin. The signature consequence is removability. Because the foundations and powders are formulated without the binders and oils that normally demand an aggressive cleansing oil at day's end, they are designed to come off with an ordinary face wash, sparing reactive complexions the friction of a double cleanse. It is a small mercy that doubled as a genuine differentiator.
Alongside the color line grew a barrier-repair skincare range leaning on ceramides, the unifying logic being a refusal to trade efficacy against gentleness in either direction. The model spread through hundreds of multi-brand retail counters and a handful of directly run stores staffed by trained advisors, the slow word-of-mouth route rather than viral noise.
That patient build attracted outside capital well before it became a headline acquisition: in April 2020 L Catterton's Asia fund, tied to the LVMH orbit, took a stake, marking the firm's first investment in a Japanese beauty brand. The trade-offs are the familiar ones for the format, mineral foundations skew toward lighter coverage and prices sit above drugstore lines, but for skin that punishes the slightest provocation, the gentleness here is structural rather than slogan.

More about ETVOS
ETVOS was founded in Osaka in 2007 and acquired by the Japanese trading house Marubeni in 2026.
Its mineral makeup and ceramide skincare are formulated for sensitive and atopic skin; the brand's credibility rests on a long sensitive-skin specialism rather than published independent clinical trials.
