The story behind MDSolarSciences Read the full story

The pitch the founder made to his patients was simple and personal: wear sunscreen every day, and let's keep you off my exam table. As a dermatologic oncologist who saw, in his words, more than his fair share of skin cancer, Dr. Robert J. Friedman had watched the human cost up close — 'the pain, the fear, the loss of confidence, even the loss of life' — and he wanted to move upstream from treatment to prevention, half-joking that he'd happily put himself out of a job. The deal kept failing for a maddeningly mundane reason. Patients told him, over and over, that sunscreen was too sticky, too greasy, too whitening to actually use, and he concluded they were right: the most protective formula is worthless if no one reapplies it.

So the brand was reverse-engineered from compliance rather than chemistry. The conviction that a product could have, as he put it, 'luxurious, high-end aesthetics' and still be serious medicine drove the formulation work. Mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — were engineered into lightweight finishes that skip the chalky cast, and the bases were dosed with a proprietary ProVention-R complex of antioxidants such as green tea, cranberry, pomegranate, and vitamin C, so the carrier does protective work instead of just suspending the minerals. A creme SPF 50 emerged as the workhorse, later joined by tinted and BB versions, a kids' formula, and quick-dry body sprays.

The formulas pointedly omit oxybenzone and octinoxate, the chemical filters restricted in places like Hawaii, and the brand built its early reputation through dermatology offices and spas before pushing toward broader retail. The honest read: the pedigree is real and the niche genuinely useful. Mineral SPF suits some tones better than others and the supporting skincare is competent rather than remarkable — but for a sunscreen you'll actually keep reaching for, the founder's entire career is the argument.

Quick Dry Body Spray SPF 40

A non-aerosol body sunscreen that dries fast and doesn't leave you greasy — a genuine convenience win for limbs and torso. Reef-conscious filters and an amla antioxidant boost show thought. But the alcohol base that makes it quick-drying also makes it drying, and spray formats demand careful application to actually work.

KidCrème Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40

A genuinely good pediatric mineral sunscreen that earns its National Eczema Association seal through actual formulation choices rather than marketing claims. The dual titanium-and-zinc active pairing, plus the niacinamide and bisabolol additions, make this the kind of tube pediatric dermatologists quietly recommend when parents ask what to buy.

Daily Perfecting Moisturizer SPF 30

MDSolarSciences Daily Perfecting Moisturizer SPF 30 is a genuine two-in-one — broad-spectrum chemical sunscreen plus a real moisturizer carrying niacinamide, stable vitamin C, ceramide NP, and a botanical antioxidant complex. It absorbs cleanly with no white cast and suits dry-to-combination skin. The honest catch: SPF 30, when SPF 50 is increasingly the daily standard.

Mineral Moisture Defense SPF 50

The brand's high-zinc mineral SPF 50 with a genuine ceramide complex bolted on — and that addition does real work. Three ceramides plus phytosphingosine make this a true sunscreen-and-barrier-moisturizer in one, ideal for dry and compromised skin. Iron oxide adds melasma-relevant protection. At $38 it's the priciest of the line, but the dual function helps justify it.

Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30

A tinted mineral sunscreen that doubles as a no-makeup-makeup base. The same high 17% zinc load and iron oxide visible-light protection as the brand's flagship, with a universal tint that gives genuine light coverage. Great for melasma and sensitive skin. The honest catch: it's SPF 30, lower than the brand's own SPF 50 options, at a premium $36.

Mineral Crème SPF 50

A flagship mineral SPF 50 from a brand founded by a melanoma oncologist — and that origin shows. A 17% zinc oxide load, iron oxide visible-light protection, and a four-part antioxidant complex make this a clinically serious sunscreen, particularly for melasma and sensitive skin. The natural-tint finish and $30 price are the only points to weigh.
