The grain at the heart of this brand carried a loaded name long before it reached a serum bottle: in old China, black rice was called "forbidden rice," a delicacy reserved for royalty and recorded in classical medical texts as a guard against aging. That mythology is doing real marketing work, but there's a measurable reason the ingredient sits at the center of the line — fermenting black rice dramatically multiplies its antioxidant activity, and that fermentation step is the actual point of difference, not the grain alone.
The founder approached all of this as a designer first. With a background in art and design rather than chemistry, Jae Won Jeong cared as much about how a product looked and felt in a daily ritual as what it contained — which is why the Black Rice bottles are molded to echo the grain's shape and the Original line's containers are styled like takeout coffee cups, a small visual cue to make skincare feel like a morning habit. The packaging design was concrete enough to win a Bronze A' Design Award in 2019.
That design-led, in-house philosophy shaped the business model too. The company runs its own labs and handles development internally, which it credits for keeping hero products in the teens-to-low-twenties price range even as it scaled fast, with management guiding toward roughly eighty million dollars in revenue and pushing into major U.S. retail. The catalog stays barrier-focused and plant-leaning: the black-rice hyaluronic toner, a bakuchiol eye cream using the gentler retinol alternative, a probiotics essence.
The honest read is the usual one for fast-rising K-beauty. The fermentation science is real and the formulas are genuinely calm, hydrating and pleasant to use generously at the price — but the more sweeping efficacy language leans on ingredient-level studies and a swelling review base rather than brand-specific trials. For a gentle daily routine, it's an easy one to reach for.

More about Haruharu Wonder
Founded around 2019 in Seoul by Jae Won Jeong (sources vary between 2018 and 2019); built on fermented black-rice formulas and a patented delivery technology, its claims rest largely on ingredient research and a fast-growing review base rather than published independent clinical trials.
