Bench work, not branding, came first. Through the 1980s and 1990s Thornfeldt ran laboratory studies on how skin actually functions and repairs itself, collaborating with research teams in the San Francisco area on questions about lipids, inflammation, and cell turnover. Some of those findings fed into pharmaceutical products still on the market today, long before any cream carried his name.
The drive behind that obsessive lab focus was personal. He grew up on a farm and fought severe eczema as a child, and in practice he kept seeing the same frustrating pattern: the actives that treated chronic conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea also tended to wreck the skin's protective layer, leaving patients raw and stinging. The fix, he eventually concluded, lay not in stronger synthetics but in botanicals, plant-derived lipids and extracts that could deliver results while keeping that protective layer intact.
That reasoning produced the Renewal Facial Cream, built around a blend that includes rosa canina (rosehip) fruit oil, meadowfoam, safflower, and olive oils, a moisturizer the line treats as its anchor rather than a single hero among many. The catalog grew into a deliberate treat-and-maintain system, organized so clinicians can pair a corrective product with a maintenance one for a given skin state.
The approach has stayed unusually consistent. More than sixteen clinical studies have been run on the finished formulations, and one frequently cited trial compared the Renewal cream paired with a lytic treatment against leading retinoids on visible aging. The distribution model is just as deliberate: rather than chase retail shelves, the line is sold mainly through dermatology and medical offices, which keeps it tied to professional guidance and partly explains why a brand this scientifically serious stayed quiet while flashier names borrowed its core idea.
