The idea came from watching wealthy shoppers behave like bargain hunters. A then twenty-three-year-old NYU business student, Joseph Shamah, noticed that even affluent customers happily tossed cheap makeup into dollar-store carts, and reasoned that genuinely good cosmetics could be sold at radically low prices without insulting the buyer. Working with his father Alan, who supplied the business infrastructure, and co-founder Scott Vincent Borba, he opened with thirteen products priced at a dollar each, an audacity baked into the name's three categories of eyes, lips and face.
The dollar-makeup disruptor matured into a financial machine. The company learned to run a TikTok-native marketing engine that drove one of the lowest customer-acquisition costs in beauty, and that same low-cost discipline let it bring prestige-style formulas to sub-twenty-dollar price points when it built out its skincare arm. The Holy Hydration franchise became the skincare anchor, translating the makeup model, recognizable benefits at a fraction of the expected price, into serums, eye creams and cleansers.
Where the operation reveals its real strategy is acquisitions. Rather than originate clinical research, the parent company has bought credibility and reach: a dermatologist-favored skincare brand in 2023, and in 2025 a far larger move, the roughly eight-hundred-million-dollar purchase of Hailey Bieber's Rhode, a direct-to-consumer line generating over two hundred million in annual sales whose founder stayed on as chief creative officer. The pattern is consistent, speed and replication over invention.
The honest read is about what that model buys and what it doesn't. For the money, the skincare line is genuinely hard to beat: competent, accessible, ethically produced formulas that let people experiment with actives without a painful spend. What it usually isn't is an originator, the innovation lives in value, distribution and marketing more than in novel chemistry. As an affordable on-ramp to a real routine, it's quietly democratizing.
