Beauty of Joseon
More about Beauty of JoseonThe story behind Beauty of Joseon Read the full story
Long before a viral sunscreen, there was a bathhouse legend. Court records and folklore hold that Joseon-era noblewomen — Hwang Jini, the era's celebrated beauty, among them — steeped boiled ginseng roots and leaves in their bathwater to keep their skin luminous, a ritual the brand mines directly for its ginseng-forward lineup. Ginseng has been cultivated and prized in Korea for millennia, and the brand's reach into the royal pharmacopeia is less marketing veneer than genuine source material: rice, mugwort, green tea, honey, propolis and orchid recur across the range because they recur across centuries of hanbang practice.
The modern catalog reflects that lineage in concentrated form. The Ginseng Essence Water is built on roughly 80 percent ginseng water; the Dynasty Cream pairs revitalizing ginseng with softening orchid; the rice-and-probiotics sunscreen earned its cult status by solving the one thing Western shoppers hated most about mineral and Asian SPF — the chalky white cast — at a price that felt almost implausible. That single product did more to globalize the brand than any campaign, the formula itself becoming the advertisement as users screenshotted its weightless finish.
The odd part of the story is the geography of its fame. The label caught fire abroad — a fixture of Western skincare TikTok and Reddit — well before it became a mainstream name in Korea, an inversion of the usual K-beauty path where domestic hype precedes export. Today it ships to more than fifty countries while holding to its founding aesthetic: muted packaging echoing traditional Korean ceramics, short heritage-ingredient lists, and prices kept deliberately low. Not every SKU is a standout, and the range trades depth of clinical backing for accessibility and feel. But the heritage framing here is earned rather than borrowed, and the best formulas genuinely outperform their cost.

More about Beauty of Joseon
Beauty of Joseon was first established in 2016 and substantially reinvented in 2019 under Seoul-based Goodai Global, building its identity on Joseon-era hanbang (Korean herbal) ingredients.
Reputable sources disagree on its founder, so none is stated; its formulas use well-regarded traditional ingredients, but as a brand in its current form for under a decade, it has limited long-term independent clinical validation.
