The story behind Be Plain Read the full story

Most skincare brands guess at what shoppers want; this one had the receipts. Its parent, Moments Company, is an affiliate of Birdview, the operator of Hwahae, Korea's enormous crowdsourced cosmetics-review app, and beplain was effectively built on top of that firehose of user feedback. The debut products were formulated against real review data rather than a marketing brief, which is why the early lineup reads like answers to specific complaints: a low-irritation foam, a soothing ampoule, nothing flashy.

That data loop kept turning after launch. When the Cicaful ampoule drew polarized reactions to its fermented ingredients, the brand pulled them, dialed up hyaluronic acid and glycerin, and shipped a 2.0 version; a chamomile lotion appeared simply because customers kept asking the toner to come in a richer format. The single-ingredient identity is unusually literal — the centella ampoule runs around 84 percent Centella asiatica extract, the chamomile toner past 80 percent French chamomile, the signature cleanser about a third mung-bean extract, a grain long used in Korean home skincare to calm and soften.

The naming is its own quiet thesis. "Plain" was chosen, per the founders, to feel ordinary and universal, a brand any age or gender could reach for without a regimen lecture, an explicit rejection of the transformation-and-miracle vocabulary the category runs on. The eco-positioning is more than a slogan too: packaging is molded from sugarcane bagasse rather than virgin plastic.

The payoff arrived domestically first, with the mung-bean cleanser and Cicaful repeatedly topping Hwahae's own category rankings and accumulating a wall of Korean beauty-award wins before the brand pushed into Southeast Asia and the West. It remains a young house whose authority comes from sales velocity and review volume rather than long-run trial data — but few brands can claim their formulas were reverse-engineered from a national review database.

Be Plain Bamboo Hydrating Cream jar K-Beauty Sensitive Skin Pick
Be Plain moisturizer

Bamboo Hydrating Cream

A genuinely well-formulated K-beauty hydrating cream that does what its name promises without theater. Five ceramides plus cholesterol plus phytosphingosine in a fragrance-free bamboo-water base is the kind of barrier-repair formulation more brands should attempt at this price. The main caveats are limited US availability and the need for an additional occlusive layer on very dry skin.

Be Plain cleanser

Greenful pH-Balanced Cleansing Foam

A genuinely impressive K-beauty foaming cleanser at a price that almost no Western competitor matches. Glycerin at position one, 33% mung bean extract, two gentle amino-acid surfactants, fragrance-free, and a small ceramide bonus tucked into the INCI. The 80ml tube is small for the price, but the formula does what most twenty-five-dollar cleansers cannot.

Be Plain BHA Peeling Ampoule 30ml glass dropper bottle Gentle BHA Gateway
Be Plain exfoliant

BHA Peeling Ampoule

Be Plain's BHA Peeling Ampoule is the BHA you give people whose skin is too reactive for the standard recommendations. With 0.22% salicylic acid in a base that's over 80% green tea water, it's gentle enough for daily use on sensitive complexions while still delivering the slow-and-steady BHA benefits that make this category worth using. It's not the right pick for users who need clinical-strength acne treatment, but as a daily-use gateway exfoliant, it's hard to beat at the price.

Be Plain toner

Chamomile pH-Balanced Toner

One of the best-formulated hydrating toners under twenty dollars, full stop. Roman chamomile at over 80% concentration is the kind of formulation choice most brands talk about and almost none actually make. Add Centella, purslane, licorice root, and a small ceramide boost in a fragrance-free, alcohol-free base, and you have a toner that quietly outperforms competitors at three times the price.

Be Plain serum

Cicaful Ampoule

If the Beplain Chamomile Toner is the brand's calming-routine opening act, the Cicaful Ampoule is the headliner. Centella asiatica at 84.28% replacing the water phase is the kind of formulation choice that genuinely changes how a product performs on reactive skin. It is one of the few K-beauty serums where most users notice visible calming within the first week, and it pairs with the brand's Chamomile Toner to create a two-step routine that quietly outperforms most luxury sensitive-skin lines.

More about Be Plain

Operated by Seoul-based Moments Company (established 2018), beplain is a clean-focused K-beauty brand built around high-percentage single ingredients such as centella; as a young brand its standing rests on strong domestic sales and reviews rather than independent clinical validation.
