The story behind Sebamed Read the full story

The brand was supposed to be called Sebumed. A clerical slip at the patent office rendered it Sebamed instead, and the founder, pragmatic to the end, simply kept the mistake. It is a fittingly understated origin for a company whose entire reason to exist is one stubborn number: 5.5, the pH of healthy human skin.

The story begins in the dermatology department of the University of Bonn in the 1950s, where the young physician watched eczema patients suffer under the harsh alkaline soaps of the day. Standard medical advice then was a bathing ban, an instruction to simply wash less, because soap so reliably wrecked already-compromised skin. He traced the problem to the acid mantle, the skin's faintly acidic protective film, and concluded, in his own provocative phrasing, that people had been washing themselves incorrectly for two thousand years. His soap-free, tenside-based cleansing bar entered production in 1963, a genuinely radical alternative that let reactive patients wash regularly without stripping the barrier.

The proposition has barely changed since. Every formula is soap-free and balanced to pH 5.5, engineered to support rather than disrupt the acid mantle and microbiome. The line exported across borders within a few years of its commercial launch and now spans well over a hundred formulations worldwide, from infant ranges to cleansers, body washes and targeted clear-skin and anti-aging lines, all tethered to that single acid-balanced premise. The family-run parent company remains headquartered on the Rhine.

What distinguishes it from the later flood of gentle-cleanser brands is depth of receipts, a substantial body of clinical testing accumulated across decades. The honest read is that this is medicinal skincare in the least glamorous, most trustworthy sense: no proprietary hero molecule, no viral moment, just methodical commitment to one principle. If your skin is reactive and you prefer boring reliability over novelty, that single-mindedness is the whole point.

Moisturizing Cream

Twelve ingredients. pH 5.5. 2% vitamin E. No parabens, no silicones, no sulfates. Sebamed's Moisturizing Cream is German pharmacy minimalism at its most disciplined — a cream that does exactly what moisturizer should do and nothing more. The fragrance is the one blemish on an otherwise immaculate sensitive-skin formula, but at under $15, it remains one of the most honest values in skincare.
