By the late 1990s a quiet problem had crept into the franchise: shoppers thought of it as slightly mature, a brand that had aged alongside its earliest fans. The fix was to lean even harder into a single obsession. The label borrows the French word for snow, an image of crystal-clear, dewy skin, and it bet that moisture alone could carry an entire house.
The wager paid off through a string of category-defining launches. The Water Sleeping Mask arrived around 2002, when "sleeping mask" was barely a recognized format outside Korea, and it taught Western shelves what an overnight gel could do. The air-cushion compact, pioneered within the same Korean beauty empire, put liquid foundation into a sponge-loaded pact and became one of the most widely imitated makeup inventions of the 2010s. Then came the breakout that crossed oceans: a September 2017 relaunch in the United States, anchored by a Sephora exclusive on the Lip Sleeping Mask, a small berry-scented pot that sold out repeatedly and introduced a new generation to the name. By 2024 the company reported one Water Sleeping Mask leaving shelves every thirteen seconds.
The market entries were deliberate and staged. Target carried the brand briefly from 2014, Sephora Canada picked it up in 2015, and a 2019 "Luminous Beauty" rebrand sharpened the moisturizing identity once more. Each step kept the focus narrow: texture, glow and comfort rather than corrective chemistry.
The honest read is that this is a polished mid-prestige hydrator whose hero products genuinely deliver lasting, comfortable moisture. The caveats are scope and price. Its specialty is feel, not treatment, so it is not where you solve stubborn pigmentation or active acne, and a few cult items carry a premium inflated partly by virality. For dewy, well-hydrated skin from a label that truly understands water chemistry, it earns its standing.

More about Laneige
Laneige was launched in 1994 by Amorepacific, South Korea's largest beauty company, and built its identity on hydration-focused 'Water Science,' with hero products including the Water Sleeping Mask and Lip Sleeping Mask.
It is backed by Amorepacific's substantial R&D, though its strength lies in hydration and texture rather than clinically corrective treatment.
