The story behind Etude Read the full story

The pink dollhouse aesthetic hides a surprisingly sharp commercial machine, and also a surprisingly steep fall. The corporate lineage stretches back to 1966, decades before the candy-colored stores most shoppers picture, and the label spent years as a quiet cosmetics line before its parent reinvented it. The retail concept that defined the brand, the Etude House standalone store, opened in 2005 and scaled at a sprint: the hundredth shop arrived by 2007, the two-hundredth by 2009, each built around what the company calls "Princess Marketing," with staff greeting shoppers as princesses inside frosted, costume-clad interiors. International rollout followed fast, reaching Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines in 2009, Myanmar and Brunei in 2010, and a Shinjuku flagship in Tokyo by late 2011.

K-pop did much of the heavy lifting. The brand cycled through a who's-who of endorsers, from actresses Song Hye-kyo and Jun Ji-hyun to 2NE1, Red Velvet, SHINee (its first male face, in 2011) and later Le Sserafim's Kazuha, turning seasonal cushion compacts and shade-rich color cosmetics into idol-adjacent must-haves. Its longest-running skincare staple, the collagen-and-baobab Moistfull line, sat beneath the makeup as the dependable, affordable hydrator.

Then the model that built it nearly broke it. Earnings peaked in 2014 at roughly 300 billion won; as foot traffic migrated online and Chinese competition intensified, revenue slid toward 200 billion by 2017 and near 100 billion two years on. The brand shuttered its China stores after seven years, exited markets like Hong Kong and Singapore's physical retail, and posted losses deep enough to push it into capital impairment, with liabilities exceeding assets. The rescue plan was a wholesale pivot to e-commerce and a streamlined identity, simply ETUDE, betting that the playful, beginner-friendly spirit could outlast the road shops that once carried it.

Etude cleanser

SoonJung 5.5 Foam Cleanser

Close to a platonic ideal of a budget gentle cleanser: mild amino-acid surfactants at a barrier-friendly pH 5.5, soothing panthenol and madecassoside, fragrance-free, and just under fifteen dollars for a generous tube. It won't remove heavy makeup solo and the experience is plain, but for daily sensitive-skin cleansing that respects your barrier, it's hard to beat at any price.

SoonJung 10-Free Moist Emulsion

The Goldilocks moisturizer in the Soon Jung lineup — more substantial than the All In One Gel, lighter than a traditional cream. The squalane-lecithin base provides genuine barrier support in a silicone-free, fragrance-free format that works for almost everyone. At $20 for 130 mL, it's one of the most sensible everyday moisturizers for sensitive skin on the market.

Etude moisturizer

Moistfull Collagen Cream

A delightful K-beauty moisturizer that delivers genuine hydration through its unique 63.4% hydrolyzed collagen water base and satisfyingly bouncy texture. The plumping effect is immediate and the price is accessible. Just manage your expectations — this cream hydrates beautifully but won't rebuild your skin's collagen structure. For what it actually does, it does it well.

Etude moisturizer

Moistfull Collagen Deep Cream

The richer, winterized sibling of Etude's cult-favorite collagen cream. It trades some collagen water for heavier emollients that create a more protective moisture barrier — ideal for genuinely dry skin or cold-weather rescue. Not as universally wearable as the original, but it fills a real gap for those who need more than a gel-cream can deliver.

Etude SoonJung Cica Calming Ampoule Essence soothing centella essence bottle for sensitive skin Barrier-Calming Essence
Etude serum

SoonJung Cica Calming Ampoule Essence

A focused, fragrance-free cica essence that does exactly what reactive skin needs: calms redness with centella and panthenol while hydrating with beta-glucan and dual hyaluronic acid, all in a deliberately minimal, irritant-free formula. At eighteen dollars it's a reliable, gentle barrier-recovery layer — not a dramatic treatment, but a genuinely useful soothing step done right.

Etude toner

Moistfull Collagen Toner

A pleasant, genuinely plumping hydration toner whose 'collagen' is a surface humectant, not a collagen-builder — it makes skin feel instantly bouncy and dewy, and it's affordable and generous. But a fairly high placement of denatured alcohol and the absence of any real anti-aging action mean it's best understood as a nice hydration step, not the firming treatment the name implies.

Etude eye cream

Moistfull Collagen Eye Cream

A pleasant, affordable hydrating eye cream built around Etude's signature high-collagen base, around 65 percent hydrolyzed collagen, plus squalane and shea for a cushiony, plumping finish. It softens dry, tight under-eyes nicely, but it is hydration dressed in collagen marketing, not an anti-aging treatment, and the added fragrance keeps it off the table for sensitive eyes.

Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sun Milk SPF50+ PA++++

A reformulated, fully mineral sun milk that finally makes zinc oxide feel light: SPF50+ PA++++ broad-spectrum protection with a dry, airy, sebum-controlling finish and soothing oils, aloe and hyaluronic acid to keep it comfortable. It is a smart, affordable pick for oily and sensitive skin that wants physical protection without grease. The added fragrance and the usual faint mineral cast are the main caveats.

Etude SoonJung x Director's Moisture Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ pale blue tube, 50 mL Post-Scandal Tested Sun Cream
Etude sunscreen

SoonJung Director's Moisture Sun Cream

A light, essence-like, fragrance-free chemical sunscreen built from five modern photostable filters and finished with SoonJung's centella, panthenol and allantoin, it dries clear and faintly matte, sits well under makeup and is tolerated by reactive skin that has failed heavier formulas. The 'tested' SPF is a brand-paid test rather than an independent one, the hydration is lighter than the name promises, and it is not water-resistant, but as a daily sensitive-skin sunscreen it is a strong one.

SoonJung Sheet Mask Panthensoside

A fifteen-ingredient, fragrance-free bamboo sheet mask that puts panthenol and madecassoside high enough to matter and leaves out everything reactive skin argues with, it calms redness from over-exfoliation, sun or a breakout for the evening and costs under five dollars a sheet. It hydrates lightly, does nothing beyond soothing, and the sheet runs small, but as the calm-down step in a sensitive-skin routine it is exactly what it claims to be.

It's a pleasant, affordable everyday lotion for normal-to-combination skin — provided you accept that the 'collagen' is surface hydration, not firming, and that the added fragrance rules it out for sensitive skin.

Ginger Sugar Overnight Lip Mask

A genuinely effective, affordable overnight lip treatment: rich shea and murumuru butters sealed under a proper beeswax-and-candelilla occlusive layer that leaves chapped lips noticeably smoother by morning. The warm ginger-sugar scent is part of the charm, though the added fragrance means very sensitive lips should be cautious, and the ginger itself is more about the experience than the results.

SoonJung Director Tone-Up Pink Sun Cream

A mineral-only pink tone-up sunscreen that manages the trick most of its kind fail, spreading a real zinc-and-titanium load thinly enough to leave a satin, lightly rosy finish rather than chalk, with niacinamide placed high and SoonJung's calming garnish to keep reactive skin comfortable. It is months old, its pink suits fair-to-medium skin far better than deeper tones, the base runs rich on oily skin, and the SPF test is the brand's own, but as a sensitive-skin tone-up it is a well-made one.

A cheap, competent ester-based cleansing oil that emulsifies fast, rinses clean and leaves dry and normal skin soft, with a nine-oil botanical blend led by coconut for the 'Moisture' afterfeel and a refill pouch that keeps the price around fourteen dollars a bottle. It carries fragrance high on the list, its thin slip makes for a short massage and a fight with waterproof mascara, and the coconut base breaks out some acne-prone users; a fair starter oil for the double cleanse, not a destination.

The collagen story is hydration dressed as regeneration and the fragrance is a pity, but the plump, calm, dewy result is real and repeatable.

More about Etude

Launched as a makeup brand in 1985 and owned by Amorepacific, Etude is an affordable, playful K-beauty line backed by its parent's R&D rather than by independent clinical studies.
