Dr. Dennis Gross
Launched in New York City in 2000 by board-certified dermatologist and former skin-cancer researcher Dr. Dennis Gross with co-founder Carrie Gross; the brand conducts clinical testing on its formulas and was acquired by Shiseido in a deal announced in late 2023 and reported at $450 million.

Before there was a product, there was a frustration. By the 1990s the in-office chemical peel had become a fashionable but punishing procedure — high concentrations of a single acid, peeling skin, and days of downtime that put it out of reach for anyone with a job to keep. Working from the Fifth Avenue dermatology practice he opened in 1990 after his NYU Medical Center residency, the founder had a different instinct: blend several alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids together at lower individual strengths, so the cocktail could resurface effectively without the trauma of one harsh acid going it alone.
Turning that clinic technique into something safe for nightly home use took close to five years of patent and packaging work, with his wife — the self-described original 'peel addict' — driving the push to get it out of the treatment room and onto bathroom shelves. The result was the two-step daily peel that the whole catalog still orbits, the rare prestige skincare object that asked people to do something dermatologists had spent decades telling them to do sparingly: exfoliate every single day.
From there the line widened well beyond acids. Vitamin C and ferulic formulas, retinol treatments, and eventually a device business arrived, the most visible being an LED face mask whose blue-and-red panels became a fixture of celebrity selfies and helped pull the brand into the at-home-device era. Underpinning the consumer label the whole time was a working spa and clinical operation, giving the formulas a real-world testing ground few founder brands can claim.
The candid read concerns habit more than chemistry. A premium pad you replenish forever is a recurring cost, and genuinely daily acid exfoliation is more aggression than many barriers want — used with restraint, though, the hero peel earns the cult that grew around it.
