The founder was a country kid before she was a chemist of any kind. Raised in rural Korea and battling acne and reactive skin she could never find a gentle-enough product to soothe, she started blending her own natural formulas at nineteen with no training and no industry contacts, purely out of desperation to stop making her own face worse. That self-taught, kitchen-experiment instinct never left the company, and it explains why the range still reads like a single person's obsession rather than a committee's roadmap.
The formulating logic is a kind of maximalist minimalism: choose one well-studied botanical per product and crank its concentration as high as the chemistry will physically allow. The flagship propolis serum pushes the flower-resin extract past eighty percent, essentially trading out the water phase for active, then layers in an EGCG complex to rein in oil and discourage fresh breakouts. The same thinking runs through the eggplant, green tea, mugwort and centella products, short ingredient lists, restrained fragrance, one decisive hero doing the heavy lifting, precisely the profile that twitchy, breakout-prone skin tends to tolerate.
The brand wears its ethics on its sleeve in a verifiable way: it carries certification from the Vegan Society in the UK, the oldest such organization in the world, and leans on cruelty-free, naturally derived sourcing manufactured domestically in Korea. Growth followed the familiar indie path, not department-store counters but international K-beauty stockists and acne-focused online communities, where word of a dense, jelly-textured propolis serum at a modest price traveled fast.
The sober notes are worth keeping in view. The 'more is more' concentration story is partly marketing, hard data on these exact formulas is thin, and a propolis serum this rich is simply off-limits to anyone with a bee allergy. As a founder-driven, single-hero line, though, the small but loyal following is easy to understand.

More about Bonajour
Founded around 2012 by Dahae Kim, Bonajour is a Korean indie brand built on minimalist, high-concentration botanical formulas; independent clinical validation of its specific products is limited, with efficacy evidence drawn mainly from retailer reviews rather than peer-reviewed studies.
