The goats came before the business, and they weren't even the founders' goats. In 2006 the couple bought the 1802 farmhouse in Sharon Springs as a weekend escape from Manhattan; soon after, a neighbor named Farmer John, facing foreclosure, asked whether his roughly eighty goats could shelter in their empty barn. They said yes and invited him to stay on as caretaker, a small act of rural neighborliness that quietly stocked the company's future supply chain.
When the recession cost both men their jobs within a month of each other in 2008, the goats became the answer to a mortgage problem. Goat-milk soap was the first product, and the early bar was deliberately, almost comically modest: the math, they later said, was that they only needed to sell about eighty dollars of soap a day to keep the farm. Brent Ridge coded the first website himself; the duo cold-called Fifth Avenue stores and landed Anthropologie as an early stockist, then turned their own lives into content with the reality series The Fabulous Beekman Boys.
The inflection point was television in two forms. Their 2013 Amazing Race win sent daily orders from roughly a hundred to thousands overnight, and the brand then found its true home on QVC and HSN, where live segments, often featuring baby goats, made it a top skincare seller across both channels. Ulta, Target and Amazon followed, alongside playful pop-culture tie-ins.
Growth eventually drew outside capital, with the investment group Eurazeo taking a controlling stake in 2021 in a deal reported around sixty-two million dollars, and the company has since passed a hundred and fifty million in sales and sold tens of millions of bars of soap. What hasn't changed is the premise: lactic-acid-rich goat milk as a gentle barrier-and-microbiome story, sold with disarming warmth.

More about Beekman 1802
Founded in 2008 by Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr.
Brent Ridge, Beekman 1802 is an independently owned goat-milk skincare brand that conducts clinical and microbiome testing on its products; its core claims rest on goat milk's lactic-acid content and the brand's own testing rather than on broad independent dermatological literature.
