What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are a form of scarring that occurs when layers of skin tissues are torn. The marks initially appear as red or purple streaks and then gradually fade to a lighter color.

In essence, stretch marks are the result of skin being rapidly stretched. Weight gain and pregnancy are the most common cause of this condition. Although they pose no health risks, some people choose to have them be treated for cosmetic reasons. See our treatment video for more information.
