Hair Loss Treatment
While there are many causes of hair loss the most common is male pattern baldness, which is what I will address here.
Over-the-counter products that contain minoxidil has shown to slow down the process of male pattern hair loss. For men 5% is more effective than the 2%. It’s applied twice daily and some people get irritated from the minoxidil containing products which may require discontinuation, but for the most part as well tolerated.
For men, a doctor may prescribe finasteride which is a pill that stops the conversion of testosterone into DHT which is the active form at the hair follicle and which is believed to promote hair loss.
There also medical procedures such as hair transplants which are used to restore hair to an area of loss. Before starting treatment please consult the doctor to find out if you have an underlying medical condition and to determine which treatment option is right for you.
