Dr. Howard Murad's first attempt to sell his skincare line to the public was, by his own account, a total flop. To explain what a doctor-branded clinical line even was, he poured money into a late-night infomercial. It made dermatology history and not a single dollar. Most people would have quit; he shot a second one. That one connected, and the world's first modern doctor-branded clinical skincare brand was finally in business.
Murad founded the company in 1989, at the age of fifty, after years as a board-certified dermatologist and trained pharmacist in Los Angeles. His thesis was deceptively simple and, at the time, faintly radical: skincare is healthcare. Rather than treat the face as a cosmetic surface, he argued that visible results came from treating the whole body — hydration, nutrition, and stress alongside topical actives. He branded this 'Inside-Out' beauty, and built a catalogue around vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids, and later his signature emphasis on cellular water.
The brand's real innovation was access. Before Murad, clinical-grade formulas largely required a trip to the dermatologist; he sold them through spas, estheticians, and eventually mainstream beauty retailers, putting professional-strength products directly in consumers' hands. The line grew into a fixture at Sephora, Ulta, and Nordstrom and a staple in Massage Envy spa treatments, reaching more than forty countries and over $115 million in annual sales by the end of 2014.
That scale drew a buyer. In July 2015 Unilever acquired Murad outright, folding the founder-led company into its prestige portfolio while Dr. Murad stayed on to keep expanding the range.
What you're buying is genuine dermatological pedigree — the topical actives are well-chosen, evidence-backed, and reliably effective for aging and acne concerns, and the price sits sensibly in the mid-prestige bracket. Treat the surrounding 'wellness' philosophy as the founder's worldview rather than settled science; the formulas, thankfully, stand on their own.

More about Murad
Founded in 1989 by board-certified dermatologist and trained pharmacist Dr.
Howard Murad, the brand was among the first to bring clinical-grade skincare to consumers without an office visit, and its formulations are backed by decades of practice and published research. Acquired by Unilever in 2015, it retains deep dermatological credibility, though some of its wellness-adjacent 'inside-out' claims rest on softer evidence than its topical actives.
