Kopari
Founded in San Diego in 2015, Kopari is a coconut-oil-based clean beauty and body-care brand that has taken venture and celebrity investment; its formulas rest more on coconut oil and sensory experience than on extensively researched actives.
The story behind Kopari Read the full story
Kiana Cabell grew up Hawaiian, reaching for coconut oil the way other households reach for a first-aid kit, then formalized that instinct by training as a certified organic chef at New York's Natural Gourmet Institute, where she studied integrative health and nutrition. Gigi Goldman, meanwhile, was a stay-at-home mother of three who'd independently discovered the same ingredient's multitasking knack and happened to be married to a beauty-industry veteran. When Cabell joined forces with the Goldmans and a co-founder of the cold-pressed juice company Suja, the obsession finally had a business plan.
The hero arrived first and the rest of the line grew around it. The Coconut Melt — pure organic coconut oil pitched as a do-everything balm, prized by Cabell during pregnancy as a stretch-mark salve — set the template, and the team built outward into deodorant, lip care, sunscreen, and body products from there. The sourcing story was central to the pitch: small batches handpicked from family farms in the Philippines, kept from extreme temperatures and carefully cold-pressed to preserve the rawness the founders prized.
Growth came fast for a direct-to-consumer launch. Within roughly three years the brand had jumped from its own website onto the shelves of Sephora, Nordstrom, Ulta, Anthropologie, and Free People, and a sizable funding round led by L Catterton — alongside a famously starry cap table — supplied the capital and the buzz to keep expanding.
The clear-eyed verdict separates the vibe from the chemistry. Coconut oil is a genuinely pleasant occlusive moisturizer with a gorgeous scent and feel, and as a breezy body-care and hydration line the brand delivers exactly what it advertises. But the origin myth oversells it: coconut oil ranks high on the comedogenicity scale, so acne-prone faces should tread carefully, and several products lean harder on sensory pleasure than on rigorously studied actives.
