Resveratrol – its claim to fame is as the active ingredient in red wine that protects against heart disease and cancer. In truth, red wine contains very little resveratrol, but the red grape and other fruits are its primary source. Although it sounds too good to be true, resveratrol also has sufficient scientific data backing its claims as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory with significant benefits for skin. Antioxidants are known to delay the process of aging and prevent the signs of aging – fine lines and wrinkles – from showing up by stimulating the growth of collagen. And anti-inflammatories can help to calm and soothe irritated skin. More recently, resveratrol is making headlines for its potential to fight acne. Commercial treatments for acne may still be quite some time away from being available.
