Fusidic acid (fucidin cream, fusidic acid, fusidate sodium), is an antibiotic medication, available as a topical ointment, cream or gel. Available by prescription, it is primarily used to treat gram-positive infections from the Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Corynebacterium bacteria. Fusidic acid works by stopping the bacteria from reproducing but does not kill it, which is why it is called “bacteriostatic”. Fusidic acid is available by prescription and should be used exactly as your doctor indicates. Side effects may occur at the beginning of treatment and can include mild irritation, burning, or redness.
