Ellagic acid is a natural phenol antioxidant found in fruits – raspberry, pomegranate, blackberry, strawberry, cranberry – and nuts such as walnuts and pecans. Long known for its health benefits, new research is being done to test whether the same antioxidant properties can translate into topical skin care formulations. The early results reveal that ellagic acid can protect the collagen in skin tissue and reduce inflammation. (Collagen is the secret to skin’s youthful appearance that declines with age.) It also holds promise as an effective ingredient in sunscreens. Currently there are few ellagic acid skincare products on the market. In the meantime, including these natural foods and supplements into your diet may support the skin from the inside out.
