Azelaic Acid (AZA) is a naturally occurring acid that is found in food like whole grains. It’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, which makes it effective in the treatment of acne and rosacea. It’s also used to treat hyperpigmentation and can be found in treatments for age spots, freckles, melasma, etc. The FDA has approved azelaic acid in a concentration of 15% which is suitable for use on most skin types, although it can cause mild side effects such as itching, dryness and irritation. The drug is listed in FDA Pregnancy Category B – this means, that the drug levels that are passed into breast milk are insignificant.
